Turkish artist gives Nirvana classical spin
ISTANBULTurkish pianist Ayşe Deniz Gökçin, who lives in London, has returned at the same time to both the classical and grunge scenes, following her Pink Floyd Classical Concept album that was sold thousands, with the “#NirvanaProject.” The album is currently in the top 10 iTunes Classical Albums Charts, a first for Nirvana!
Gökçin has rewritten Nirvana classics in a new, virtuosic style, using motifs from the music and the lyrics themselves as inspiration.
The Nirvana Project describes the last five years of Kurt Cobain’s life. Dancer Ekin Bernay symbolizes Cobain’s spirit, his wife, his child and the characters in his music. Electronic musician Ivan Shopov represents the dark memories of Cobain. Pianist Gökçin brings to life the power of music that gave Cobain the will to live.
Gökçin completed her masters in piano performance at London’s Royal Academy of Music and received her bachelor’s degree at the Eastman School of Music. She was considered a child prodigy and made her concerto debut when she was nine. At 13, she performed as a soloist with more than a dozen of orchestras. Since then, she has played in major festivals around the world.
