The two-kilometer rail system will carry old and disabled people to the top of the mountain.

A two-kilometer rail system will be built on the top of Mount Nemrut, an ancient cultural site included in the UNESCO list in the eastern province of Adıyaman.

Mules will carry elderly and disabled tourists in railway cars to the top of the mountain through the system.

The rail system is a part of a tourism revival project funded by the European Union. The project also includes the establishment of a building in the city center in which the miniatures of historical and cultural artwork will be displayed and traditional foods and handicrafts will be promoted.

The Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Mustafa Ekinci said the cost of the project was 5.8 million euros. “We have a three-year process to finish the project. We plan to start this year.”

He said the project would rearrange the area surrounding Mount Nemrut. “A two-kilometer rail system will be built between the beginning of the walking route and the top of the mount. We will have six railway cars, each of which will be drawn by mules.

The railway cars have been prepared by a machine engineer considering all the needs of disabled people.

The climbing distance to the top of the mount is 800 meters. It takes 20-25 minutes. The rail system will shorten this distance. Thanks to this project, old and disabled people will not hesitate to visit the statues on the top of Nemrut,” he said.
