The release of highly anticipated music albums may be linked to a rise in fatal road crashes as drivers use their phones to access new music while behind the wheel, according to a study by researchers at Harvard Medical School.


Researchers examined traffic and music streaming data from 2017 to 2022, focusing on the release days of 10 of the most-streamed albums on Spotify. The albums included Taylor Swift’s “Midnights,” Drake’s “Scorpion” and Harry Styles’ “Harry’s House.”


Music streaming increased by 43 percent on the album release days compared with surrounding days, the study found. Fatal traffic crashes also rose by 15.1 percent, which researchers estimated was equivalent to about 182 additional deaths.


The researchers said the findings do not mean that listening to music itself causes crashes. Instead, they pointed to the possibility that drivers may become distracted when they use their phones to open streaming apps, search for an album or artist, select songs or change tracks while driving.


The increase in fatal crashes was particularly pronounced among younger drivers, male drivers and people traveling alone. The study also found a stronger association among drivers using in-car entertainment systems.


However, the researchers stressed that the study cannot establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship. The data could not show whether individual drivers involved in the crashes were actually accessing music at the time of the accident.


The findings therefore suggest an association between major album releases, increased access to music and distracted driving rather than proving that new music directly causes fatal crashes.


The study highlights wider concerns about distracted driving as smartphones, streaming platforms and connected entertainment systems become increasingly integrated into vehicles. Researchers said drivers can reduce the risk by choosing music before starting a journey or using hands-free controls instead of interacting with a phone while driving.


The findings are particularly relevant as major artists increasingly release albums simultaneously on streaming platforms, creating moments when millions of listeners may seek out new music at the same time.
