Osman Hamdi Bey’s painting sold in Paris

Osman Hamdi Bey’s 1879 painting, titled “Gate of the Great Mosque, Bursa,” has been sold for 571,500 euros at an auction in Paris.

The painting was put up for auction at Drouot Auction House in Paris. The 60 cm by 42 cm oil painting is considered one of the finest examples of the artist’s unique style.

It was announced that the painting was purchased through a phone bid by an individual who owns a mining company in Türkiye.

Osman Hamdi Bey, an extraordinary figure in the history of 19th-century Ottoman Türkiye during the second half of the century and the creator of the renowned “The Tortoise Trainer,” gained international acclaim for his art during his lifetime, exhibiting in major European capitals, including the Paris Salon, the Royal Academy in London and Vienna. He became regarded as the quintessential Ottoman Orientalist painter.
