Authorities in the northern province of Giresun were searching a rural area on Aug. 22 after receiving an unconfirmed report that an aircraft had crashed near Deregözü village in the Piraziz district.
The report was made to the 112 Emergency Call Center at around 1 p.m., prompting the dispatch of medical teams, gendarmerie, police, firefighters and personnel from the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).
The Giresun Governor’s Office said no wreckage or other sign of an aircraft had been found and that efforts to verify the report were continuing.
Giresun Governor Mustafa Koç said authorities had no record of a flight in the area.
Piraziz Mayor Mahmut Esat Ayyıldız, who joined teams at the scene, told CNN Türk that residents had reported hearing a sound but no one had seen an aircraft.
“We are at the location mentioned in the report, but there is nothing here. It may be a false report,” he said.
Initial reports suggested that a helicopter inspecting high-voltage power lines may have crashed.
Ayyıldız said such inspections were conducted periodically, but no operation was underway in the area at the time.
