Excavations in the world’s oldest temple, Göbeklitepe, which is often described as “the zero point in history,” are to be protected by two large roofs that are being built.

The head of the excavations, Professor Klaus Schmidt, said a canal-like formation was unexpectedly revealed during the construction of the two roofs. He added that two symposiums would be organized this year for the 20th anniversary of the start of the Göbeklitepe excavations.

Schmidt added that this year’s works had started on April 15 at the ancient site in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, and would continue until the end of this month. “A team of 20 academics and 30 workers have been working in the area and work will start again in the fall,” he added.
