World to celebrate 3rd Pide Day on April 1

Businessman Yusuf Kahvecioğlu aims to promote Samsun’s pide to the world.

World Pide Day is set to be celebrated on April 1 this year, aiming to present the Black Sea city of Samsun’s pide to the whole world. Pide is a flatbread pizza, traditionally eaten in the Black Sea region of Turkey.

World Pide Day events started three years ago, thanks to businessmen and airplane engineer Yusuf Kahvecioğlu. Events will be celebrated throughout the first week of April, and will take place all around the world.

Speaking to Anatolia News Agency, Kahvecioğlu said the aim is to present Samsun and Samsun’s pide to the whole world. “We celebrate these days every year. We want the whole world to know about Samsun’s pide,” he said.

Observing that there are special days for other things, such as Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, Kahvecioğlu said World Pide Day was necessary. “We thought, why not have a pide day?”

This year there will be both national and international events. “There will be events in Canada, Toronto, America, New York, Georgia, Tbilisi and Batum. In Germany we will organize in Duisburg and Berlin,” said Kahvecioğlu. “This year will be the third Pide Day. Like hamburgers and pizza, the world will come to know Samsun’s pide.”

Events in Samsun will take place at the Grand Samsun Hotel, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 1.
