Man sentenced to two years and six months after raping dog

A man has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after stealing and raping a dog in Istanbul, daily Radikal reported today.

The man received the prison sentence on charges of “stealing locked property,” as the dog’s owner, Tülin Palay, first filed the case for the robbery.

The 60-year-old man was captured by police after Palay saw him stealing her dog in a car in 2011. A police officer and other witnesses testified in court, confirming that the dog had been abused. 

The judge was applauded by animal lovers monitoring the case in the court after the sentence decision.

The judge said the complaint filed for robbery was helpful for the processing of the case, adding that animal protection laws were not effective in Turkey.
