Local official bans Turkey’s symbolic 10th year anthem in Bolu The director of national education in the Black Sea province of Bolu has banned the playing of Turkey’s 10th Year Anthem in schools, in a controversial move likely to anger secularists.

Yusuf Cengiz defended the move against criticism, saying Turkey would write a “100th year anniversary” in 2023.

“I ordered the 10th year anniversary march not to be played at schools. Is there anything called the 10th year anthem anymore? We will write the 100th year anthem in 2023,” Cengiz said, attending a grade report ceremony at a school accompanied by Bolu Governor Aydın Baruş.

Cengiz and Baruş were greeted by an Ottoman-style janissary band of schoolchildren as they arrived at the school.
