AFAD chief appointed as MGK secretary
ANKARA

A presidential decree on Feb. 3 appointed Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) head Okay Memiş as the secretary-general of Türkiye's National Security Council (MGK).
Memiş, born in 1970, previously served as a legal advisor at the Interior Ministry and held the position of chief advisor at the Science, Industry and Technology Ministry.
He later served as the governor in the northeastern city of Gümüşhane and nearby Erzurum. He had been leading AFAD since Aug. 11, 2023.
The decisions signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also named Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan as the new head of AFAD, replacing Memiş.
Additionally, the head of the Interior Ministry's Migration Administration Presidency, Atilla Toros, was appointed as the Mersin governor, with Hüseyin Kök assigned to take over his former role.
The decree also included new diplomatic assignments, appointing Başak Genç Yüksel as Türkiye's ambassador to Ulaanbaatar and Ufuk Ulutaş to Tashkent.
