800,000 Turks to vote in German elections

BERLIN - Anadolu Agency
Around 800,000 Turks are expected to cast in their votes in the Sept. 22 elections in Germany, with a majority likely to vote for the Social Democratic Party (SPD), according to Anadolu Agency.

Around 5.8 million voters of foreign descent will be casting their ballots in the upcoming election, with Turks amounting to nine percent of this total. Members of the Turkish community often vote in favor of the SPD due to their citizenship stance and attitude towards Turkey’s European Union accession, but experts have recently been detecting a trend of increasing support among Turks for Chancellor Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The totality of Turkish votes adds up to a one percent of the all of votes cast nationwide, Anadolu Agency reported.

Around 70 candidates of Turkish descent are running in the elections, but only a few of these appear likely to end up in Parliament.
