New Party lawmaker Melih Meriç was hospitalized after being stabbed during a visit in the southeastern province of Gaziantep, officials said.
The attack occurred in the Karataş neighborhood of Şahinbey district. Emergency teams took Meriç, who represents Gaziantep in parliament, to Gaziantep City Hospital. His condition was not immediately clear.
Gaziantep Governor Kemal Çeber said authorities were closely following the case.
“We are monitoring the matter closely. I hope to see our lawmaker back among us soon,” Çeber told state-run Anadolu Agency.
Police opened an investigation into the attack.
No official information was immediately available about the assailant or motive.
Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş condemned the stabbing and wished Meriç a speedy recovery.
“Violence has no justification, excuse or legitimacy,” Kurtulmuş said, adding that parliament would follow the investigation until the attack was fully clarified and those responsible were brought to justice.
