Adana’s former Mayor Aytaç Durak, whose term as mayor was suspended by the Interior Ministry, was arrested yesterday due to corruption charges.

Three other people including Durak’s son-in-law Bekir Cavcav and Adana Mayor’s Office former Secretary-General Hasan Gülşen have also been arrested. 

Durak, who was a member of the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the mayor of Adana for 21 years, was temporarily removed from office March 28 due to the allegations of corruption made against him. He also stepped away from his party after MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli called on him to resign.

Durak’s former right-hand man in the Adana Municipality Mustafa Tuncel accused the mayor of abusing his official power and building a $2 billion fortune by making changes to public works plans. Durak denied accusations made by one of his aides he made a $2 billion fortune, saying his wealth was around $40 million and the main source of his assets was his wife’s family.
