District gendarmerie commander in Turkey’s Trabzon detained over Gülen links
AA photoThe local gendarmerie commander in the Maçka district of the Black Sea province of Trabzon was detained on Aug. 23 over his alleged links to the Gülen network, believed to have been behind last year’s failed coup attempt, state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.
Counter-terrorism police detained Lt. Zabit Zengin as a part of an İzmir-based investigation into the network, the agency reported.
Proceedings on Zengin’s case are ongoing at the police headquarters.
Maçka was the scene of clashes between security forces and outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants earlier this month.
On Aug. 11, PKK members had killed 15-year-old local boy Eren Bülbül and Gendarmerie Master Sgt. Ferhat Gedik in an armed clash.
