Turkey’s possible membership in the Shanghai Cooperation would be interesting, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Jan. 28.Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had recently said in a television interview that Turkey is seriously considering seeking membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as an alternative at a time when the EU’s future looks increasingly dim.
When asked during the State Department’s weekly press briefing whether Nuland had any comment on the issue, she said it would be interesting. “I didn’t see that comment by Erdoğan. Obviously, it would be interesting, given the fact that Turkey’s also a NATO member. We’ll have to see how that goes.”
