Turkey out of European champs with Russia loss

Russia will meet Serbia in the semifinals after knocking Turkey out.

Turkish national women’s volleyball team bowed out of the European Championship after a quarterfinal defeat at the hands of Russia on Sept. 12.

Russia beat Turkey in straight sets, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19, in the quarterfinal game, punching the ticket to the semifinal, where it will meet Serbia.

In the other semifinal, Belgium will meet Germany.

Turkey’s star player Neslihan Darnel said: “Russia played very well. I think it was a very close game until the middle of all sets, but we made to many mistakes in the end. It was a good experience for us to play against a team like Russia, but of course it was our goal to go to Berlin.”

Both semifinals will be played tonight.

The final game as well as the third-place playoff match will be played in Berlin on Sept. 14.
