Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic resigned on Sept. 27 ahead of next month’s snap parliamentary election, in which he will stand as his party’s candidate for prime minister.
Addressing the public at the presidential palace in Belgrade, Vucic said he had signed his resignation and would hand over his duties to parliament speaker Ana Brnabic, who will serve as acting president.
He said the first round of a presidential election must be held by the end of December.
Vucic will contest the Oct. 25 parliamentary vote on the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) ticket.
“I want to compete as an ordinary man, as one of the people,” he said.
Vucic said whoever won the public’s trust would have to preserve peace and stability and sustain economic development.
He said innovation, artificial intelligence and robotics should be priorities to ensure Serbia did not fall behind.
