UEFA President Michel Platini has won European lawmakers' support to legally protect his plans to curb excessive spending by top football clubs.

UEFA and the European Commission say they reached agreement that Platini's financial fair play regulations conform with rules on government aid and fair competition.

UEFA says the accord is a "big milestone in the enforcement" of financial rules which took effect last June.
The European football body has said it expects future legal challenges from clubs who are punished for spending more than they earn.

UEFA promises it will bar the worst offenders from entering its lucrative Champions League competition.
The 27-nation European Commission wants to prevent clubs getting public bailouts.
