Quranic class gets praised
ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
The head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate Mehmet Görmez.
The head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate, Mehmet Görmez yesterday welcomed the planned introduction of Quranic studies in schools, while cautioning that the issue should not become a subject for dispute.“For 88 years, we have hurt each other and broken hearts because of certain suspicions, fears and misgivings. It’s not right to repeat that. Religious education should not be a subject for polarization and fighting,” Mehmet Görmez said.
“In a Muslim country, it is an innocent and reasonable demand to want to learn the Quran in a modern educational environment,” he said, adding that religious education was an integral part of freedom of conscience around the world.
