KOCAELİ
A Syrian national suspected of being a “media specialist” for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) was arrested in Turkey’s Kocaeli province on Feb. 2.
Named as “Abdulbasit Abdulaziz Hammud” by Doğan News Agency, the 22-year-old suspect left the Syrian city Aleppo to illegally enter the Turkish city Hatay, whence he arrived in Kocaeli’s Derince district via Gaziantep, the Turkish gendarmerie discovered.
The suspect joined the ISIL in 2012 and recorded terrorist activities of the organization for publication online, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
The Kocaeli Provincial Gendarmerie Command detected him after he rented a flat with a fake identity document. According to intelligence gathered by the Turkish authorities, he had been ordered to form a “sleeper cell” in Derince.
