Eskişehirspor beat Kayserispor 1-0 on Dec. 17 to claim its fifth victory in a row, matching a season record in the Spor Toto Super League.

A sole goal by Veysel Sarı gave the victory to the Red-Blacks. Eskişehirspor is up there with leader Galatasaray on a five-match winning streak.

On Friday’s opening match of round 16, Galatasaray extended its lead with a 2-0 win over Orduspor.
Galatasaray has 34 points, trailed by Fenerbahçe, who has 31 points with a game in hand, while Eskişehirspor climbed to third with 29 points.

Fenerbahçe was scheduled to take on Trabzonspor on yesterday’s late kickoff. The game was still in progress as Hürriyet Daily News went to press.

Eskişehirspor coach Michael Skibbe praised his team for the victory.

“I am very happy with what my team has done today,” the German coach said during the post-game press conference. “We did what we should do – from the start to the finish. We gave almost no chances to them.” Chilean winger Rodrigo Tello said the team was steadily improving.

“Kayserispor was right behind our back before the game,” he said. “So it was important for us to show that we are a solid side and we are improving every day.”

In another hot streak, Mersin İdman Yurdu extended its unbeaten run to eight games, with the 5-3 victory over Kardemir Karabük also on Saturday.

Mersin came back from 3-1 deficit only in the 23rd minute but managed to hit back with Andre Moritz in the 26th minute and Beto in the 55th. With the game nearing the end, Mersin İdman Yurdu was awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute and Wissem Ben Yahia gave the Mediterranean side the lead. Nigerian winger Nduka Ozokwo added a fifth in the stoppage time.

Mersin rose to sixth, while Karabük remained 16th.

Bursaspor-Antalyaspor and Ankaragücü-Gaziantepspor games ended in goalless stalemates on Saturday, while the Istanbul BB vs. Sivasspor game was 1-1 yesterday.
