Two detained in dam killing

GİRESUN - Anatolia News Agency
Two people were detained in relation to the death of four workers due to a landslip at a hydropower dam construction site in the northern province of Giresun’s Dereli district on May 15.

“The prosecutor’s office has been continuing its investigation. Two people have been detained from the dam construction company. We are following the developments,” Dereli District Gov. Musa Evin said yesterday.

One worker, Zafer Kırlak, was injured in the landslip; his condition was reported to be improving.
The incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. on May 15. Workers Mustafa Yiğit, Kenan Özdemir, Kerem Erdem and Eren Erdem were killed after becoming buried underground.

The dam’s construction was being conducted by a private company, according to reports.

“The landslip apparently occurred in a place where the water was supposed to be kept. We don’t know yet whether the incident was an accident or whether it stemmed from negligence,” Dereli Mayor Zeki Şenlikoğlu said.

The funerals of the four workers were held yesterday.
