Opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ said on July 19 that her party had never reconciled with the “coup mentality,” but would not reconcile with the “climate and ground” that created and expanded this “mentality” either.Condemning the July 15 failed coup attempt and the bombardment of parliament that night, Yüksekdağ said the “peoples of Turkey” did not deserve to be governed with coups or with undemocratic regimes, vowing to follow the “same path” that defied such regimes, dictatorships and coup impositions.
Yüksekdağ added the fact that such an attack was carried out against the place of Turkey’s “elected representatives” showed the “dire” situation that the country’s democracy was in.
“Experiencing this kind of coup situation in Turkey cannot be evaluated by looking at its outcomes. If we want to get into a forcefully and rooted faceoff with coups and coupism, we should faceoff with the conditions that created the coup. As the HDP we use this will to do what is undone,” said Yüksekdağ during her party’s parliamentary group meeting.
“A junta mechanism, a military coup mechanism has grown itself within a civil political coup mechanism... Tearing down the coup does not mean that democracy won. In this country, there had been four coups but never could a democracy have been constructed,” said Yüksekdağ.
