An attack on King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia's capital killed 12 people and injured 309 on Saturday, forcing authorities to suspend airport operations, the country's civil aviation authority said.

The dead included four Saudis, two Bangladeshis and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan. The injured were receiving treatment at hospitals, some in critical condition, the authority said.

The attack also caused property damage, which authorities were still assessing. Airport operations were temporarily suspended while officials evaluated the damage and checked the safety of the facilities.

The suspension disrupted flights, and passengers were advised to contact their airlines before heading to the airport. Kuwait Airways canceled its Saturday services to Riyadh and return flights, citing the closure.

The attack came as tensions rose following a series of Houthi missile and drone strikes on Saudi airports and other facilities in recent days.
