The High Court of Appeals upheld this morning a five-year prison sentence for former Interior Minister Mehmet Ağar although the ex-politician will receive a conditional release in two years.

Ağar was recently sentenced to five years in prison as part of the Susurluk trials, which were launched in the wake of a traffic accident that occurred in the town of Susurluk in Balıkesir in 1996.

The incident brought the close relationship between the government, security forces and organized crime to the public’s attention.
