Former intelligence detained

Retired counterterrorism head at the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) Mehmet Eymür was detained yesterday for having alleged connections to several extrajudicial murders committed in the early 1990s.

Eymür was reportedly detained in relation to the testimony of former special operations officer Ayhan Çarkın. Çarkın confessed to being part of state groups that committed criminal acts in the struggle against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) earlier in June.

Çarkın confessed to a series of deep state operations that included hundreds of deaths and said he would reveal more to prosecutors if a formal case was opened.

Çarkın, along with six others, was later arrested on suspicion of murder.

The murders were committed in the early 1990s, when numerous unsolved murders occurred in Turkey’s southeastern region.

Eymür was reported to be detained in Istanbul and taken to Ankara for questioning.
