Curious locals turn ‘mystery of crying girl’ in Çorum cemetery into festivity

Locals of the central Anatolian province of Çorum have turned the “mystery of the crying girl” at the cemetery into a festivity, as the mystery still remains unsolved.

On April 26, witnesses reported a teenage girl crying and speaking to herself in one of the graves. The next day, workers at the cemetery found the girl but then she disappeared, after which they left a note on the grave saying they could help her. They also informed police about her ghostly image.

Locals have started to keep watch every night in and around the cemetery to find the girl and continue to search for her until morning hours. Families, including little children, have flocked there despite the ban to enter the cemetery in evening hours. Peddlers open their stalls to turn the crisis into an opportunity.

Although surveillance cameras have been mounted around the grave the girl had been seen crying on, until now, there has been no trace of her in the camera footage.

Meanwhile, the cemetery warden said he was the first person who saw the girl.

“I have been working here for seven years. They called me at 9:00 p.m. that night. So, I was the first person who saw the girl. I said to her ‘I am a cemetery officer, I will help you, don’t escape,’ but she ran away and disappeared. I cannot remember her face clearly,” Fikret Yumutkan said.

The mysterious girl was last seen at the cemetery on May 1, according to police officials.

The girl reportedly continued to come to the grave to cry and managed to escape officials each time and disappear into the shadows of the cemetery.

Police said the girl was dressed in black and wore red shoes and was crying on the grave of a woman who died in 1982. The girl reportedly appeared around 15 years old and police efforts are continuing in order to solve the incident.
