Drafting a new constitution together with Turkey’s citizens will increase the public’s trust in civil politics, Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek said addressing a meeting in the eastern province of Erzurum yesterday.

Çiçek emphasized the need for and significance of the new constitution at the “Turkey is speaking” meeting, organized by the Constitution Platform.

“When we write the new constitution together with you, civilian politics’ aptitude and means for solving issues will increase. After that, the belief that Parliament is the place where every issue should be discussed, debated and solved will be strengthened. Trust in the Parliament will increase. This is the answer to those questions that start with ‘What if we cannot do it?’ If this cannot be done, then trust in politics will decrease. [The level of] trust in the Parliament will fall,” Çiçek said.

Turkey should reach a consensus and an agreement by coming together and by including everyone in the process, Çiçek said.
