A bus has hit two women, killing one, in Istanbul after its driver suffered a heart attack while driving in traffic.

The passenger bus, operated by İstanbul Özel Halk Otobüsü Şirketleri (Istanbul Private-Public Bus Companies), skidded off the road in Beykoz district at 12:30 p.m., according to Doğan News Agency.

Two women, who were collecting tree branches on the roadside, were rescued from under the bus, whose driver suffered a heart attack while going to the Alibahadır village on the outskirts of the city, the company said in a written statement.

Hanife Güneysu, one of the women, died, while her sister, Şengün Gürsoy, was injured, the report said.

Police detained the driver and launched an investigation into eyewitness reports suggesting that the man was busy with his cellphone while driving the bus at the moment of the crash.
