Crossings over the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges will be free beginning from July 17 until repair works on the links are completed, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said yesterday.
"Crossings over the bridges will be free starting this Tuesday," Erdoğan said in a meeting of his Justice and Development Party (AKP) in the Marmara province of Kocaeli, noting that because they did not want there to be any waits during the collection of tolls, they made the crossings free.
The repairs are expected to be completed on Sept. 17. Istanbul residents have been suffering in massive traffic jams since repair work started on the major bridges last month.
"We will finish the third bridge in two years,” the prime minister also said. "The Marmaray project will also be opened on Oct. 29 next year."
