Newly-appointed municipal council member, muhtar killed in Van

A muhtar in the Erciş district of the eastern Turkish province of Van, who was recently appointed as a member to the Erciş municipality council, was killed in an armed attack by unidentified masked men in front of his house on Oct. 16.Mehmet Şerif Doğu, the muhtar of the Latifiye neighborhood in Erciş, was attacked by the group and died at the scene.
He was appointed to the Erciş municipality council by the Interior Ministry in a recently passed decree law.
Police have started an operation to capture Doğu’s assailants, who fled after the attack.
