Cirque du Soleil to return to Istanbul after 10 years

The world-renowned circus troupe Cirque du Soleil will meet art lovers in Istanbul after a 10-year hiatus with its production “OVO.”

The company will stage a total of eight performances at Ülker Arena between May 21 and 24.

Meaning “egg” in Portuguese, “OVO” brings the ecosystem of nature and insects to the stage through movement, color and acrobatics. Reflecting the hidden world of nature, the production features striking stage design and acrobatic performances, presenting life from the perspective of small creatures.

The costumes for the show were designed by Liz Vandal. Inspired by nature and the world of insects, Vandal incorporated graphic lines and geometric forms reminiscent of designers such as Pierre Cardin. The pleating technique used in the costumes, created with fabrics that allow freedom of movement, is an adaptation for the stage of a method developed by Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake.

The music for the production was composed by Berna Ceppas, blending bossa nova, samba, funk and electronic elements. Ceppas drew inspiration from the sounds of insects while creating the compositions.

The stage design, created by Gringo Cardia and inspired by insects’ habitats, transforms at times into a giant forest or cave, with the floor resembling a massive tree trunk. An 8.5-meter-tall egg placed at the center of the stage forms the core of the “OVO” universe and serves as the main axis of the story.

Tickets for the performances are available online.
