Bayraktar discusses nuclear energy cooperation with AtkinsRealis

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar met with senior executives of Canada-based nuclear energy company AtkinsRealis to discuss cooperation on projects planned to be implemented within the scope of Türkiye’s nuclear energy program.

“We discussed the technical cooperation topics related to the projects we plan to implement under our nuclear energy program, as well as the ongoing studies on the applicability of CANDU technology in our country,” Bayraktar wrote on X on March 30.

“With a range of technologies extending from large-scale plants to small modular reactors, we aim to strengthen our energy basket and build our long-term supply security on solid foundations,” he added.

“We will continue our technical dialogue in the coming period to advance this cooperation to more in-depth topics,” he said.

Türkiye aims to bring the first reactor at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant online in 2026 and start generating electricity.

Discussions were underway with South Korea, the United States and China regarding the construction of nuclear power plants in Sinop and Thrace, Bayraktar said in late January.

Türkiye envisions a total of 12 reactors across Akkuyu, Sinop and Thrace, in addition to at least 5,000 megawatts of small modular reactors.

The country aims to reach 20 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2050.
