Simit alarms police

ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
A simit caused a brief security scare yesterday in Ankara after police noticed a suspicious package outside the U.S. mission in the Turkish capital, but subsequent investigation by bomb squad teams revealed the object to be the bagel-like Turkish pastry.

Ankara police have been on edge for the last few weeks following the eruption of protests around the Muslim world over the U.S.-made film “Innocence of Muslims,” which allegedly mocks the Prophet Muhammad.

Hundreds of protesters in Istanbul burnt U.S. and Israeli flags on Sept. 22 while a small group of 50 protesters gathered in front of the U.S. embassy to condemn the movie on Sept. 16.
