Some married Russian women resident in Turkey hesitate to apply to the police in cases of domestic violence as they are afraid of their Turkish husbands, according to Marina Sorokina, the head of a Russian community organization in the southern province of Antalya.

The main triggers for domestic violence that Russian women face in Turkey are cultural differences and economic problems, Sorokina said at a press meeting yesterday, where she announced a conference on judicial problems of the Russian community in Turkey, which will be held on April 28.

Russian deputies are expected to join the event along with lawyers from both countries. Russian women in Turkey are usually not economically independent, Sorokina said. “Turkish men want to earn money themselves and their wives to stay with them. In some period time, families face problems regarding those two issues.”

Russian women living in the country have to wait for five years before obtaining work permits, she added. Russian women usually feel lonely in Turkey as their families are in Russia, while the families of their spouses live in Turkey, the organization’s head also said.
