Police detained 30 leftist students in Istanbul University yesterday when a group of extreme nationalists raided the Beyazıt campus.

The students said the police intervened as tension between the groups rose.

Almost 30 leftist students were detained, online news portal bianet reported. Among the detained are the editor of Hayat TV, Cem Şimşek. Şimşek’s lawyer, Semir Karakaş, said Şimşek was detained as he was recording the incident with his cell phone and that they were still unable to reach him.
