Governor denies police’s use of violence

ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
A 19-year-old student who allegedly miscarried after being severely beaten by police at a protest in 2010 did not miscarry due to police violence, Istanbul Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu has said, responding on behalf of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to a written motion from main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Tunceli deputy Hüseyin Aygün.

On Dec. 4, 2010 students gathered to protest as Erdoğan met with university rectors at his office in Dolmabahçe Palace. Numerous media outlets circulated photos showing the police’s heavy-handed treatment of the protestors, including a 19-year-old woman who reportedly lost her baby due to excessive use of police force during the protests.

According to the forensic report the young woman was not beaten, Mutlu said.

Disproportionate use of force

Also in response to Aygün’s motion, Interior Minister İdris Naim Şahin has said that 571 police officers faced investigation for alleged disproportionate use of force between June 2011 and June 2012.
