Hürriyet Daily News photographer Selahattin Sönmez will be given an award in the name of journalist Metin Göktepe.

Sönmez, a photographer at the daily’s Ankara bureau, is to receive the award for a picture capturing a student being silenced by security guards during a protest against Energy Minister Taner Yıldız’s visit to Ankara’s Gazi University.

Reporter Zeynep Kuriş, who has been in jail due to alleged connections to KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union) will be giventhe best written report award. The Metin Göktepe journalism awards are given annually for the past 15 years and they are given on Göktepe’s birthday.

Evrensel daily’s reporter Metin Göktepe was detained as he reported a story in 1996 and was killed after police brutally beat him. Six policemen responsible for Göktepe’s death were sentenced to seven years and six months in prison. They were released after serving 17 months. The award ceremony will be held on April 10 at the Istanbul Journalists’ Association in Istanbul.
