Watchdog takes steps against offensive language in broadcasts

The Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) unanimously has decided on the principle of "appropriate language" to prevent insulting and slanderous statements in sports broadcasts.

According to the statement made by RTÜK, in the principle decision taken by the supreme board, it was pointed out that a peaceful, non-violent language that respects the universal values of sports and aims to create a positive atmosphere in sports should be preferred.

RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin, in his statement on the subject, stated that it was determined that some sports programs included statements that were provocative to fans, far from common sense and insulting towards federation officials, club managers, football players and referees.

"It is inevitable to set limits within the framework of the law on poor quality programs that exceed the limits and are incompatible with neither human values nor broadcasting principles, especially in some press and broadcasting organs. These broadcasts harm the sports community," Şahin said.

 ‘Ankaragücü's coach planned attack’

Referee Halil Umut Meler, who was attacked by Faruk Koca after the match between MKE Ankaragücü and Çaykur Rizespor in the 15th week of the Turkish Super League, said that the incidents in the match started with the provocation of Ankaragücü's coach Emre Belözoğlu.

"After the whistle after the match, the players came to thank and congratulate me. In the meantime, I saw Belözoğlu's hands and arms, and the rival coach grabbed him. Just as we were focusing on what was happening, the person who committed the action punched me on my left side. I don't remember anything after that," Meler said.

“In 2018, he had a personal problem with me. I think this problem continues. He says I laughed at him when he was getting hit,” he noted.

Meler emphasized that he would never forgive Koca, who attacked him, and said that what he could not forget were the moments when he was kicked while he was on the ground. Meler added that he will also pursue the matter legally.
