President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has made an unscheduled visit to former President Süleyman Demirel to offer condolences for the death of his brother.

This was also the first meeting between the two politicians since Erdoğan was elected president last August.

The closed-doors meeting at Demirel’s home in central Ankara lasted approximately 20 minutes. Demirel’s brother, Hacı Ali Demirel passed away on Dec. 18, 2014 after a long period of illness.

Demirel served as president between 1993 and 2000. He was succeeded by Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who passed the torched to Abdullah Gül after a disputed process in 2007.
