Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke with his Qatari and Syrian counterparts, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdurrahman al-Thani and Assad Hussein Sheihbani over the phone on August 18 to discuss regional developments, the diplomatic sources have informed.
According to sources, Fidan and al-Thani discussed the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian and American sides failed to reach an agreement. Fidan, on late August 17, also spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi on the talks with Washington.
Türkiye has been intensely pushing the two sides for a permanent agreement that would allow uninterrupted use of the Strait of Hormuz by civilian and commercial tankers. Türkiye and Qatar have been working together to promote peace and stability in the region especially after the 12-day war between Israel and Iran and the war staged by the U.S. and Israel against Iran in February 2026.
Fidan also discussed regional developments with his Syrian counterpart, sources recalled. The phone conversation came amid increased military attacks by Israel on some Syrian targets and news reports that the Syrian Democratic Forces are about to announce its decision to dissolve and fully integrate with the new Syrian armed forces.
