Türkiye names new ambassador to Iran, Gulf states

Türkiye has appointed new ambassadors to nine countries, including Iran, Qatar, Jordan and Kuwait, according to a decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and published early Aug. 18.

Ahmet Aydın Doğan was appointed as Türkiye’s ambassador to Iran. Doğan previously served as ambassador to Morocco and as head of the Foreign Relations and Protocol Department at the Turkish parliament.

Yakup Caymazoğlu, currently Türkiye’s ambassador to Jordan, was appointed ambassador to Qatar, while Hakan Karaçay, deputy director general for the Middle East at the Foreign Ministry, was named ambassador to Jordan.

Can Oğuz, deputy director general at the ministry for Eastern Europe, was appointed ambassador to Kuwait.

The decree also includes ambassadorial appointments to Moldova, Djibouti, Estonia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Botswana.

The appointments to Iran and the three Gulf states came as a 60-day cease-fire between Iran and Washington expired on Aug. 17 amid the ongoing regional conflict. Gulf states hosting U.S. military bases have been increasingly drawn into the conflict as they have become targets of Iranian retaliatory strikes.
