Book types, numbers fell in 2012

ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News
The total number of individual books printed in Turkey decreased by 3 percent last year, while the number of titles decreased by 2 percent, according to data provided by the Turkish Publishers Association (TPA).

The data show that 42,626 titles were published last year. Including school books, delivered to schools by the National Education Ministry for free, a total of 480,257,824 individual books were printed. The number of books per person therefore averaged out at 6.4. In 2011, the number of books printed in Turkey was 493,469,590, an average of 6.8 per person.

“There was 2 percent decrease in titles published year-on-year, while there was a 3 percent decrease in individual books printed,” the TPA’s statement read.

When it comes to the world, the International Publishers Association shows that not all countries are equal in book publishing.

Places like the U.S., Europe, and parts of Asia have particularly strong publishing industries, while Africa and the Middle East lag behind, meaning that the number of books published in those places is extremely low compared to the rest of the world.
