A top Microsoft executive has warned about security loopholes in computers in Turkey, especially those used by public institutions, where over 90 percent of computers do not use the latest software.

“Not keeping up-to-date software causes security vulnerabilities. At Microsoft we develop all our up-to-date software in a most secure way. Using up-to-date software also means automatically protecting yourself [against viruses and security breaches],” Microsoft Turkey Deputy General Manager Murat Yılmaz told reporters in Ankara on March 7, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Yılmaz said the ratio of not using latest software in Turkey’s public institutions was above 90 percent, while only 60 percent of users throughout Turkey kept their software up-to-date.

He said using up-to-date versions of software is important because older versions often fail to meet current cybersecurity challenges.

Microsoft has a cybersecurity center to protect cloud technologies and the teams working in those centers check 200 billion e-mails, 300 billion personal identities, and more than one billion devices every month, Yılmaz added.
