Israel launches fresh attacks across southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes and artillery struck several areas of southern Lebanon early on Aug. 21, while Israeli forces carried out detonations in border towns, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Jets hit Mansouri in the Tyre district shortly after 2 a.m., with powerful explosions heard across surrounding villages and towns.

Further airstrikes targeted Ali al-Taher and Dabsha hills near Nabatieh al-Fawqa, as well as the area around Kfar Roummane.

The outskirts of Mayfadoun, toward Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, came under intermittent artillery fire.

Israeli forces also carried out detonations in Hadatha and al-Tiri in the Bint Jbeil district and a two-stage blast between Arnoun and Kfar Tibnit. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The attacks came despite a ceasefire in effect since April 17 and a U.S.-brokered framework agreement signed on June 26.

The framework provides for a phased Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory in exchange for the deployment of the Lebanese army and the disarmament of armed groups, including Hezbollah.

During a visit to the Benoit Barakat army barracks in Tyre, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said restoring the country’s sovereignty required a single strong army.

“Restoring sovereignty can only be achieved by building a capable state, and a capable state cannot exist without one strong army,” Salam said.

He said Beirut would continue working to secure a complete Israeli withdrawal and the return of Lebanese prisoners.

The Lebanese Health Ministry said Israeli attacks since March 2 had killed 4,346 people and wounded 12,301.

More than 1 million people have been displaced during the conflict, according to Lebanese authorities.
