Turkey hands over detained Sunni activist to Lebanon

BEIRUT – The Associated Press
Lebanese security and airport officials say authorities have detained a prominent Sunni activist arrested in Turkey who is wanted for having large amounts of weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades, in his home.

The officials say Bilal Duqmaq was brought back to his native Lebanon aboard a Turkish jet and was accompanied by Turkish policemen who handed him over to Lebanese authorities.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said Duqmaq will be referred to judicial authorities.

In November, an arrest warrant was issued for Duqmaq after Lebanese troops raided his house in the northern city of Tripoli and captured large amounts of weapons and ammunition, including automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

He was in Turkey at the time and remained there until his return Wednesday.
