Sea tornado stirs panic in Istanbul neighborhood

A sea tornado has stirred panic among some locals of Istanbul’s Yeniköy neighborhood.

Also known as a waterspout, the sea tornado approached the coast after it formed in the Marmara Sea on Aug. 8.

As excited locals watched, the waterspout caused no damage as it disappeared after hitting the land.

Waterspouts are unique structures formed over the sea or ocean surface. The reason for waterspouts in the sea is believed to be a vertical wind shear—a wind force that changes direction as it goes higher.
