Istanbul municipality dismisses reports of cancellation of Kabataş Seagull project

The Istanbul Municipality has dismissed recent reports that a project for the construction of a seagull-shaped transfer center in the Kabataş neighborhood was cancelled.

The municipality issued a statement on Sept. 4 saying the project is still ongoing. “The cancellation of the project of Kabataş Square Landscaping and Transfer Center [Seagull] is out of question. The project will be readjusted so that road traffic is not moved underground. It will be completed as soon as possible and put into service for the residents of Istanbul,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Hakan Kıran, the architect who designed the project, said he had not received any information regarding the cancellation of the project.

The Kabataş ferry dock in central Istanbul was shut down in 2016 to be redesigned as a seagull-shaped transfer center and the rearrangement of the pier as a square.

The project foresees the construction of the new transfer center shaped like a seagull with open wings and a 10,000-square-meter pedestrian concourse on the Kabataş coast in the metropolis’ Beyoğlu district.

The transfer center is expected to integrate marine, railway, and road transport.
