An inmate at a prison in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır that has been conducting a hunger strike since Nov. 4 was hospitalized last night due to gastric bleeding.

Ümit Aslan, 32, was taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Dicle University Hospital for more advanced treatment.

Doctors have started Aslan on a vitamin supplement program to aid him in his recovery.

The inmate reportedly underwent a liver transplant two years ago.

Over 700 people both inside and outside prison entered the 67th day of a hunger strike today to demand an end to the isolation of the imprisoned leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Abdullah Öcalan, as well as end to restrictions on Kurdish in the courts and in education.
