The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) released cinema and theater statistics for 2017 on June 26.

Based on the statistics, the number of movie theaters increased by 8.4 percent last year compared to 2016 and reached 2,692. During this period, the number of seating in movie theaters increased by 7 percent and audience capacity reached 328,845.

In the same period, the number of moviegoers in the country increased by 23.9 percent compared to 2016 and reached 68,482,526. While the number of national productions’ audiences increased by 31.5 percent and reached 37,904,091, the number of foreign productions’ audiences increased by 15.7 percent and rose to 30,578,435 people.

The number of movies shown last year increased by 8.9 percent compared to the year before and reached 58,214. In the same period, the number of national productions shown increased by 11.6 percent and reached 25,275, while the number of foreign productions shown increased by 6.9 percent and rose to 32,939.

Provinces without movie theaters

The number of provinces that do not have movie theaters was four in 2017, which are Ardahan, Bayburt, Şırnak, and Tunceli.

In the 2016-2017 season, the number of theater halls increased by 8.6 percent. Compared to the 2015-2016 season, the number of theater seats increased by 9.7 percent. The number of the theater halls reached 783 and the seating capacity reached 287,214.

As compared to the 2015-2016 season, the number of performances in theater halls increased by 18.2 percent and became 31,690 in the 2016-2017 season. The number of performances for original shows performed in theater halls increased by 19.8 percent and the number of performances for translated/copyright shows increased by 12.8 percent compared to the last season.

According to TÜİK statistics, as compared to the 2015-2016 season, the number of shows performed in theater halls increased by 15.2 percent and reached 8,948 in the last season. The number of original shows increased by 15.3 percent and of translated/copyright shows increased by 14.5 percent, too.

In the 2016-2017 season, the number of theater audiences increased by 16.4 percent compared to the previous season and reached 7.6 million. The number of theater audiences for original shows increased by 19.6 percent and the number of theater audiences for translated/copyright shows increased by 6.6 percent compared to last season.

Again in comparison to the 2015-2016 season, the number of adult shows performed in theater halls increased by 3.4 percent and the number of children shows performed in theater halls increased by 29.5 percent in the 2016-2017 season.

In this period, while the number of performances for adult shows in theater halls increased by 5 percent, the number of performances for children shows increased by 37.1 percent and reached 15,060. In the same period, the number of audiences for adult shows increased by 7.9 percent and the number of audiences for children shows increased by 29 percent.
